On the weekend of September 15th, my boyfriend and I set out on an adventure to the Catskills mountains. We camped at a primitive campground called Devils Tombstone, which is actually the oldest campground in the state. No showers, no sink in the bathroom, and by bathroom, I mean a ‘hole in the ground with a roof over it’. This was of course fine by the two of us. We enjoyed each others company, our tent camping, cooking by fire, hiking all day kind of weekend.
We got to Devils Tombstone campground, spot #22, on Saturday afternoon after a beautiful drive through NY state. We explored the area, stopped in the town of Phoenicia and layer low that first night. Sunday morning we woke up bright and early to go on an approx. 12 mile long hike along the Devils path to Buttermilk Falls, up to the summit of Hunter Mountain and back around to the campground. It was a great hike, that was challenging for me, full of beautiful views and just simply a lot of fun. We got back to camp literally as the sky became almost pitch black, after sun down. We were too exhausted to cook so we drove a few miles to a restaurant that I wish I could remember the name of, because my lord, I ate the BEST beef stew with potatoes and vegetables of my entire life. It was warm and filling and absolutely delicious!!!
We left on Monday afternoon, reluctantly. It was a really great weekend that I know neither of us wanted to end so quickly!
Here’s a photograph of the stove at out campsite and Ryan making a fire on our first night there. I love the organization Ryan created inside of the fire pit with separate small piles of different types of kindling…
Everytime I hike I pack myself a sandwich that consists of: whole wheat bread, crunchy peanut butter and slices of apples. YUM! Seriously… you’ve gotta try this!
Here is a close up photo of water flowing through a small crevice in the rocks at Buttermilk Falls. This is actually the very first HDR image that I’ve ever created! : )
Here is the view from the top of Hunter Mountain at the top of the fire tower overlooking what seems like the entire world. Gorgeous!
And here is a photo looking down at the our packs laying on the ground at the summit.
