Fall is here, and it’s the best time of year!
Fall means cooler weather for hiking trips and outdoor activities, perfect temps for family bonfires, getting to cozy up in your favorite sweater, the seaon for picking apples & pumpkins and making pies, and enjoying the many nearby festivals that always seem to pop up this time of year like the local trunk-or-treat and Oktoberfest’s.
It’s also an amazing time to have your family portraits taken! (maybe even the BEST time.)

Do you want to know the for-real and for-true reason this is on my list?? Because I am kind of a sweaty person and I’m always worried I’m going to sweat through my shirt and it’ll be noticeable in photos. I also know I’m not the only one with this feeling… don’t worry! The fall season takes this fear right away from me and probably will for you too.

When you book a session with me I give you a pdf with some helpful tips on how to plan your outfits, knowing what a challenge this can be. One of my biggest tips is to wear layers. Why? Throughout the session we’ll be able to pull layers off and mix and match your outfit for a more dynamic range of images in your gallery. (that also all match!)
Props literally everywhere!
Props give you something to do/hold, which makes you look more natural in your posing and photographs. The fall season has no shortage of leaves to throw (and an abundance of other fun natural props) laying right on the ground under you!
I always make sure to get a few leaf fight photos at the end of my fall family sessions and it’a always the most memorable moment for the kids! We get some great photographs from them too! Don’t you think?
When should you book your fall family portrait session?
You should book your session as early as possible because availability during peek fall leaves is very limited. At least 3 months in advance is suggested.
In the 8 years I’ve been photographing families in Northern and Central NJ I’ve found that the best time in northern NJ is usually the end of October and the best time in central NJ is usually early to mid November.
