In my house film is not only alive, but it’s celebrated!

I will forever be an analog photography lover, that’s for sure. There’s something magical about the darkroom process and the sense of accomplishment after creating and developing an enlargement by hand.

For whatever reason I will also always be a pack-rat and save random objects “just because”.

This is an instance where I will be able to celebrate my love of film <3 and use some of the stuff I have laying around the house…

If you want to create a film canister garland of lights like the one pictured above, here are the simple instructions:

MATERIALS

A strand of battery operated Christmas lights. (I purchased a strand of 20 at Walmart for approx. $4.00)

Batteries to operate the lights.

Enough CLEAR film canisters for each light on the strand. (i.e. I bought a strand of 20 lights, so I needed 20 canisters)

An exacto knife with a sharp blade.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Make sure the lid of each clear film canister is firmly attached.

2. Using your exacto knife, cut an “X” into the center of the lid of each canister. The “X” I cut was pretty small – about half the size of the diameter of the lid.

3. Push each lightbulb on your strand through the “X” you cut into the lid of a canister until all of the lights are inside of canisters.

4. Place batteries inside of battery pack on strand of lights and turn them on.

5. Voila! You’re finished!

*You can hang this beautiful, yet quirky garland of lights on your front porch, on your wall or window, on your Christmas Tree, on a homemade holiday wreath or wherever your heart desires!

Personally… I plan on keeping mine up all year!
